How to Fish Bosses – All 5 in Order & How to Beat Them
Updated Aug 22, 2026 · boss names per launch-week guides, order cross-checked against Steam achievement unlock rates
What are the bosses in How to Fish? Five main-story bosses in a fixed order: Spider Crab, Giant Piranha, Pufferfish, Terrorizing Bird and the Mutated Bowhead Whale. Each one is unlocked by finishing a quest chain, and each drops a distinct trophy part you must hand in before the next island opens.
The 5 Bosses in Order
The boss order matches how the story unlocks islands, and it lines up with the Steam achievement completion rates, which drop steadily from 91.3% on the first boss to 12.9% on the final one (snapshot: Aug 22, 2026). If a boss will not appear, the quest chain before it is incomplete — check the trigger before buying gear.
| # | Boss | How to trigger | Unlocks | Unlock rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Spider Crab | Lighthouse keeper quest ("Who stole my beer") | The boat | 91.3% |
| 2 | Giant Piranha | Island 2 leech-bait chain | Route to Island 3 | 72.1% |
| 3 | Pufferfish | Island 3 tourist / carrot route | Route to Island 4 | 44.4% |
| 4 | Terrorizing Bird | Island 4 tuna + professional boss lure | Next island coordinates | 23.9% |
| 5 | Mutated Bowhead Whale | Scientist / military chain + volcano | Final progression | 12.9% |
The final boss's completion rate (12.9%) matches the "finish the game" achievement (12.7%), confirming it is the end of the story. Boss names here come from launch-week guides and community reports; the order itself is confirmed by the achievement chain.
Spider Crab – Learn the Pattern, Skip the Gear
The first boss does not need a heavy investment. There is no way to stun it yourself, so attacking it head-on while it is active does little. Wait for it to attack first, then hit it during the vulnerable window it creates, then back off. The loop is: give it space, let it swing, punish the recovery, retreat.
This is the fight that teaches the game's boss rhythm, so understanding it beats stacking early upgrades. After the fight, pick up the drop and hand it to the lighthouse keeper — that hand-in is what actually lets you leave.
Giant Piranha – Finish the Leech Quest First
If the piranha does not spawn, the leech-bait chain on Island 2 is incomplete. That is a quest problem, not a combat one. Launch-week discussions report the leeches not respawning or spawning below the intended count, so re-check the area before assuming you are stuck.
When the fight starts, take a ranged weapon and do not chase the small fry. Following adds drags the fight out, drains hunger, and opens you up to hits. Focus the boss body, take its trophy, and hand it in to unlock Island 3.
Pufferfish – Terrain Over Weapon Stats
The pufferfish is widely described as the first real wall: fast, durable and capable of ending a run quickly, even with strong weapons. The fix is positioning, not a bigger gun. Circle it around trees or solid cover, fire during the gap the terrain creates, and move before it closes the distance.
Patch 1.0.4 (Aug 21, 2026) officially nerfed the pufferfish, but the terrain strategy still applies. See the full pufferfish boss guide for the route, solo and co-op roles, and the trophy hand-in.
Terrorizing Bird – Cover, Then Commit
The islanders tell you the bird comes back if you bring tuna, and the fight needs a professional boss lure. Do not take it in open ground. Hug a wall or building to break its pressure, watch for the attack telegraph, then step out to keep firing.
This is the point where spending on your main weapon pays off — later fights are harder. After the kill, the NPC wants the bird's head specifically. Hand it in before doing anything else, then wait for the next coordinates.
Mutated Bowhead Whale – The Final Fight
The last boss is a two-step setup. Work with the scientist to prepare the whale bait, beat a normal whale first, drag it to the volcano, throw it in, and the Mutated Bowhead Whale rises as the real final fight.
Two mistakes end attempts early: trying to escape by boat, and leaning on your old weapons. The boat is not a safe zone — the mutated whale closes on it quickly, so retreating is usually death. Stay inside the volcano arena and build a rhythm of keeping distance to read attacks, surviving the landing, and restoring fire after its follow-up. The dangerous moment is the movement after the landing, not the landing itself.
Bring sustained ranged damage, enough control to track it, food, and room to move. If you are constantly healing, your damage is too low or your position is too greedy. This fight is also where the rarest achievements are earned: Handyman (last hit bare-handed, 0.4%) and Easy (boss kill in 10 seconds).
Rules That Apply to Every Boss
- Boss not appearing? Fix the quest trigger — a gun cannot fix a missing lure or hand-in.
- Boss fight stalling? Missing shots means control; landing hits slowly means damage; reload deaths mean magazine or position.
- Spend in steps: learn the crab, secure range for the piranha, positioning for the pufferfish, commit for the bird, and a mature loadout for the whale.
- Upgrade one main weapon instead of spreading cash across many half-built ones.
- Dynamite (25 coins) is the cross-boss burst option and the standard pick for the Easy achievement — place it on the escape path, not point-blank.
- Keep the distinct boss drop after every fight and try it at the quest giver before selling or eating anything.
