How to Get the Handyman Achievement in How to Fish

Updated Aug 22, 2026 · requirement from the official Steam list · unlock rate from the Steam API (snapshot Aug 22, 2026)

How do you get the Handyman achievement in How to Fish? Defeat the final boss with your bare hands. Only the finishing hit needs to be bare-handed — you fight the whole boss with your weapon, stop shooting near the end, and land the last hit unarmed. It is held by just 0.4% of players.

The Requirement, Exactly

The official Steam description is short: "Defeat the final boss with your bare hands." The useful interpretation, confirmed by launch-week guides, is that the finishing hit is what must be delivered bare-handed — not the entire fight. Fighting the whole boss with fists alone is neither required nor practical.

Patch 1.0.4 (Aug 21, 2026) explicitly repaired this achievement, so if you attempted it before that patch and nothing popped, retry on the current version.

Why It's So Rare (0.4%)

Handyman sits on top of the hardest boss in the game. The final boss, the Mutated Bowhead Whale, already stops most players — the "finish the game" achievement sits at 12.7% and the final-boss kill at 12.9%. Turning the last hit of that fight into a bare-handed punch narrows it to 0.4%.

On top of that, the difficulty is not the punching. It is avoiding the accidental weapon kill: one extra bullet turns the entire attempt into another full repeat of the whale fight.

The Safe Sequence

  1. Fight the final boss normally with your best weapon. Bring sustained ranged damage and enough control to track it.
  2. Watch the health carefully near the end — stop firing earlier than feels necessary.
  3. Switch to bare hands.
  4. Land the finishing hit and let the achievement pop.

The common failure is a single extra shot in step 2. Once the boss is almost dead, the safest habit is to stop shooting well before the kill window and finish with fists even if the punch takes a moment to land.

How to Make the Fight Manageable

The final fight has a specific rhythm: stay inside the volcano arena, keep enough distance to read attacks, survive the landing, and restore fire after the follow-up move. The boat is not a safe zone — fleeing usually ends the attempt.

Two preparation notes: leave Handyman until you already understand the final fight from a normal clear, and consider doing it on a separate run so a mistake does not cost you a full playthrough's effort. See the whale boss guide for the full fight breakdown.

Optional: Combine With Easy

The Easy achievement (kill a boss within 10 seconds) can be attempted on the same boss with a Dynamite burst, but combining it with Handyman is risky — a burst that kills the boss also removes the bare-hands window. Do them separately.
