How to Fish Island Progression – Unlock Order & Quest Chain
Updated Aug 23, 2026 · quest-chain and boss triggers from community playtesting (How to Fish Game Wiki and Whisper of the House, Aug 21, 2026 snapshots) cross-checked with our boss guide
How do you unlock the next island in How to Fish? Finish the current island's quest chain, defeat the boss it points to, and hand the boss's distinctive trophy item back to the quest giver — ordinary meat chunks do not complete the hand-in. That pattern repeats five times, from the Spider Crab to the final volcano fight.
The core rule: trophy hand-ins, not meat
Each island works the same way: a quest character wants something, that leads to a boss fight, and the boss drops a trophy piece that must be returned. The confusion happens because bosses also drop ordinary meat — players hand in the meat, nothing advances, and they assume the game is stuck.
- Spider Crab – a distinctive trophy/drop from the lighthouse-area fight.
- Giant Piranha – a piranha trophy described as a skull or tail. Generic meat chunks do not complete it.
- Pufferfish – a fin/trophy piece with a visible bone-like shape.
- Terrorizing Bird – the bird's head, explicitly requested by the NPC.
The descriptive names come from launch-day players and can differ from the exact inventory label — use the item's distinct shape and the quest giver's response as your guide. Keep trophy pieces separate until the quest advances.
Island 1 – Starting Island
Unlock: none — this is where you begin.
Quest chain: the Lighthouse Keeper asks you to find and kill the culprit behind a missing beer (the Who stole my beer quest).
Boss: Spider Crab — let it commit to an attack, punish the stunned window, then back away. Do not overspend on gear before this fight.
Hand-in & unlock: return the crab's trophy to the Lighthouse Keeper → you receive the boat, which opens Island 2.
Island 2 – Leech & Piranha Island
Unlock: complete the Spider Crab hand-in (boat).
Quest chain: talk to the local characters first (so the right objective is active). The farmer-type NPC wants five leeches collected from the island floor — they are easy to miss against the ground. The forest lady also wants dinner (Dinnertime quest).
Boss: Giant Piranha — triggered once the leech-bait chain is ready. Bring a ranged weapon and food; do not trigger it hungry.
Hand-in & unlock: the piranha skull/tail trophy → opens the Island 3 route.
Launch-day reports mention finding only two leeches with no respawn; boating away was not a consistent fix. If leeches stop appearing, re-check the intended task area before assuming you missed the boss.
Island 3 – Tourist & Pufferfish Island
Unlock: complete the Giant Piranha hand-in.
Quest chain: the Tourist wants an endangered creature — any catch tagged Endangered Species, not one specific fish. Hand it over to receive the Carrot, the boss bait. A tablet can be purchased and a radar upgrade is available here (radar speeds up searching but does not replace reading quests).
Boss: Pufferfish — the game's difficulty spike. Terrain control beats weapon spending: keep trees between you and the boss, shoot in the openings it creates.
Hand-in & unlock: the pufferfish fin/trophy → opens the Island 4 route.
Island 4 – Tuna & Terrorizing Bird
Unlock: complete the Pufferfish hand-in.
Quest chain: catch a Tuna and use it with the Professional Boss Lure to start the real encounter. The island NPC points you to it.
Boss: Terrorizing Bird — fight around cover; the ranged attack is easier to handle close to something solid.
Hand-in & unlock: the bird's head → next-island coordinates (the military island).
Island 5 – Military / Final Island
Unlock: complete the Terrorizing Bird hand-in.
Quest chain: the military island chain (Deadliest catch), then the scientist: prepare the Whale bait → defeat the normal Whale → take it to the volcano and throw it in → the final boss appears.
Boss: Mutated Bowhead Whale — stay committed to the volcano arena instead of trying to escape in the boat; bring a mature ranged build.
Finish: defeating it completes the story (We are so back).

If the next step does not trigger
- Return to every active quest giver with the trophy still in inventory — dialogue only advances after the hand-in.
- Compare the trophy with the ordinary meat from the same boss; try the distinct item first.
- Check what the objective actually asks for — a creature, a boss result, a food item or an NPC interaction, not always an island unlock.
- In co-op, confirm which player picked up the item and that the same player is present for the hand-in.
- If a required world item did not spawn, do not assume more boating fixes it — preserve the session and check current reports.
